Babes In the Wood

Despite the harrowing journey to get there, our stay on the DeGinLand Peninsula was thankfully drama free.  Well, from our perspective it was.  Perhaps not from that of our neighbors at one campground.  Honestly, Dan was just trying to help them.

They showed up, a young couple from New Jersey, in a small Tesla, late one afternoon and plugged their car into the electrical outlet.  We’ve seen plenty of “car campers” on our trip - they usually have cunning little hi-tech tents and enough clever folding equipment stowed in their Subaru Outback to make a pretty decent camp for anyone under the age of 40.

We were curious to see what a small Tesla could hold.  Not much, as it turns out.  Where were the folding chairs?  Coleman stove?  Sleeping bags?  Most importantly, where was THE TENT?  Just a few shopping bags appeared and were placed on the picnic table. Then our young couple produced some firewood and tried to start a fire.  It was not a success.  At one point they were both standing around the fire pit, on their phones, no doubt googling How To Start A Campfire.

It was getting dark and cold.  I restrained Dan as long as I could but in the end he just couldn’t stand it and had to go over and offer to help. “Don’t make them feel stupid,” I said, “They’re just babies and this is obviously their first time.”

They looked up from their phones as he approached and they stood chatting for a while.  Then Dan came back towards our rig and next thing I knew he was striding towards them with an axe in his hand.

Funny there’s no sign of our Babes……

Turns out our young couple were on their first night of a planned car camping trip to FLORIDA.  They would sleep in their car and be as “green” as possible. Their intention was to cook chicken over the campfire for dinner.  I gave them some shrimp pasta.  Turns out I couldn’t be restrained either.

They were gone when we woke up.  I like to think they got an early start to their second campsite on the exciting road to Florida.

  2. The very slim compensation is that, in time, they'll look back and -- hopefully -- cringe

  3. Lucky they encountered you both on their first night.

  6. Just found this little gem. Of course, I can see you two doing exactly as you wrote it. You are so hospitable that I expected to read how you just had to invite them over for a nibble and drinks. ❤️
