Might Be Gettin’ Good

Oregon & California

Sort of reluctant to say so. Just in case.

BUT

today, Day Two, was kind of okay. No, wait. Compared to yesterday it was brilliant.

Let’s just say that yesterday started with an axe attack and ended with an almost crushed brand new pickup truck.  Not kidding.

I almost broke one of the slide outs because I made the rookie mistake of not checking to see that the path was clear.  If your leg is in the way you will simply lose it.  Unfortunately it wasn’t a leg, it was the detachable tray tables for my big ass Lazy Boy recliners - they didn’t snap in two, they just bent and wedged themselves in, preventing the slide out from sliding in. Hence the axe attack which set just the right tone for the rest of the day. (I’ve made careful note of how much Dan seemed to relish hacking away at those tables.)

Last minute frantic house stuff then a very late departure followed by a four hour drive to the first crowded and cramped campsite. We arrived frazzled, frizzled and fried and then had to set up.  Which was when we almost crushed the truck with the trailer.  Dan is having flashbacks as I type.

A Very Steep Learning Curve was the most positive spin I could come up with on the events of Day One (there were quite a few less positive ones that sprang more readily to mind.)

In the spirit of “It surely can’t get much worse” we set out on Day Two.

We made it to our first Harvest Host - Freed Estate Vineyards in the glorious Umpqua Valley in southern Oregon. For a small annual fee you get to stay at wineries, farms and interesting places all over the country and support them by sampling their wares.   Usually you boondock (no power, water or sewer connections) but with our rig it’s no problem. We are parked (no backing in -BONUS!) with a vineyard on one side and a beautiful river on the other.

A lovely wine tasting sitting outside in the late afternoon light with visits from friendly dogs and a horse or two (how I’ve missed the smell of horses!), then fresh Dover Sole for dinner.  This was more like it. It made yesterday’s **** show disappear. Almost.

Oh, and a crescent moon and a shining star.  Might just be gettin’good.

  3. Wow!! Beautiful location, plus the food looks great. I like evening shot of the Moon and Venus in the twilight. Did the grapes in the vineyard have a particular scent? The day and evening had such great weather. I think a night-scope would be fun to use to see whether any critters are wandering nearby, or binoculars for the daytime.
